What's New in the Gay and Lesbian Arena
What Gay and Lesbian Rights and Benefits
to Look for in a Company
Despite the fact that gay and lesbian rights
are largely ignored in this country and its workplaces, there are a few modern
companies that have made great strides toward accommodating gay and lesbian
workers. These companies have set the standard for benefits and rights for
gays in the workplace. Hopefully this standard will be blown away in the
future generations, but for now it isn't a bad start.
In a recent issue of Curve Magazine, the
best-selling lesbian magazine in the US, an article was featured that highlighted
the top 30 companies for gays and lesbians to work for. The companies included
well-known names such as Pepsi, Xerox, American Express, Ford, IBM, Allstate,
Verizon, General Mills, and Kraft among others. While you may not be able
to land a job at any of these companies, the rights and benefits that they
offer can give you an insight into what some employers are doing for the
gay worker and you can refine your job search to include these perks.

|
· Domestic Partner Benefits - Many private companies
such as Xerox are now offering domestic partner insurance benefits to same-sex
partners. While jobs with these benefits are still difficult to find, they
are becoming more available as time passes.
· Insurance Coverage for Gender Reassignment
Surgeries - In the past, transsexuals had to scrimp and save to pay for these
costly procedures, but thanks to a few free-thinking companies, some transsexuals
may have their procedures covered by health insurance. Companies that offer
this benefit include Xerox, American Express and JP Morgan Chase, just to
name a few.
· Adoption Benefits - Adoption is costly
and for many gay couples it is the only way to start a family. Realizing
this, some companies have started to offer financial support to adoptive
parents. JP Morgan Chase is one and offers up to $10,000 in adoption assistance.
· LGBT (Lesbian; Gay; Bisexual;
Transgender[ed]) Support Groups - Starting in the early 90's (and some even
before this time) forward-thinking companies started to implement employee
groups for their LGBT workers. Such groups give employees a sense of belonging
and a presence that they have never experienced in the workplace before.
You can find these groups in most of your large companies.
· Diversity Training - To counteract
discrimination and harassment in the workforce, some companies require that
all employees attend a diversity training course. Even more companies require
all managers to attend diversity training.
While these strides have shown that employers
are headed in the right direction, much more remains to be done. Most gay
families are without domestic partner benefits and even in this enlightened
age people lose their jobs based solely on their sexuality.
So, when you are looking for your next job,
take considerations like these very seriously. Granted, you might want to
choose a company based on how well they pay, but GLBT equality is priceless
and a benefit you should not have to
sacrifice.
