The Gay Games - A History of Gay-esque Olympics

If you are gay or lesbian and haven't heard of the gay games you will be pleased to know that the queer version of the Olympics is alive and doing well. Despite the many cultural differences that lay between the heterosexual and the homosexual crowds the Gay Games and their straight counterpart, the Olympics, have always been something that every person can watch and be proud of.

Taking care of yourself and your body is hard work. Knowing you are competing against some of the toughest athletes in the world is a great challenge whether you win or lose. It is something that deserves a great deal of recognition. Unfortunately, in some sports being gay is not acceptable. If you have ever had problems in this area you understand what I mean. If you haven't, consider yourself to be lucky but know that sometimes people want to punish those that are better then they are for no reason.

The Gay Games alleviate all of these issues by offering a sporting and cultural event unlike any other. Just for the gay and lesbian community the Gay Games was started in the wonderfully gay friendly city of San Francisco. The year was 1982 when the first games where held.

Tom Waddell was the genius responsible for the games. Tom had a wonderful goal. His goal was to find a way to promote spirit from athletes to spectators around the world and to encourage participation by gay and lesbian athletes. Tom wanted to see a sporting event that was about people doing their personal best where everyone could fit in without fear of prejudice or unnecessary hatred.

At one point these events were known as the Gay Olympics however there was a lawsuit by the International Olympic Committee which forced the group to make a name change. Whether this was a blatant attempt at discrimination has never truly been discussed though advocates feel it could be as the Olympic Committee has allowed use of the name Olympics to other organizations.

The Gay Games are also known as the FGG (The Federation of Gay Games). The goal is to promote self-respect and good sportsmanship for gays and lesbians around the world. It is also to gain respect and understanding from the world as a whole whether gay or straight.

One thing nice about the Gay Games is that you do not have to be gay to participate. If you are straight they will not discriminate against you. You are free to play along as well since straight supporters are always welcome. The games are open to everyone that wishes to participate in them. In fact, there are no qualifying standards listed in order to compete.

The Gay Games have become quite a popular event. In fact, in Europe there is an event similar to the Gay Games known as the Eurogames which promotes similar goals and beliefs but from a European standpoint.

To date, there have been six official games with the seventh planned for 2006. The games occurred in the following schedule:

· Gay Games I - 1982 - San Francisco
· Gay Games II - 1986 - San Francisco
· Gay Games III - 1990 - Vancouver
· Gay Games IV - 1994 - New York
· Gay Games V - 1998 - Amsterdam
· Gay Games VI - 2002 - Sydney
· Gay Games VII - 2006 - Chicago

From here the Gay Games only continue to get stronger and more vibrant. Chicago has been chosen for the next event and the new selection is being deliberated. Soon the FGG committee will let us know what to expect for the future. In March, the FGG announced the top three contenders for the 2010 Gay Games. As of now, the Games of 2010 will be held in one of three spots, Johannesburg, Cologne, or Paris. Any way you look at it it's obvious it will be a grand time in a beautiful city.
