Gays and Religion

The gays have another issue to deal with apart from handling the flak that they might receive upon "coming out" with their sexuality in open. That important issue happens to be religion, something that can't be discounted off so easily from our lives. The stance of most of the religions happens to bear a note of disapproval. In fact it is not just unacceptable but is also considered to be a sin in some of the religions. Even if the religion does not consider it to be a sin yet most of the religions don't allow for marriage between the homosexuals.

Certain conservative Christians, Jews, Muslims and Sikhs even propagate a move back to the past bearings on homosexuality where the same-sex behavior was considered to be a criminal offence. Within Christianity the opinion stands divided on the issues of gays. The conservative Christians hold homosexuality to be a form of behavior, i.e. it happens to be a behavior that is chosen by the person in question. They also consider this sort of behavior not just abnormal and unnatural but they also regard this to be absolutely changeable as well as something that is abhorred by God. Some even go to the extent of calling being a gay or a lesbian as a mental disorder. The conservative faction believes that all this stems from the past of the person who might have had painful sexual experiences such as incest, or being molested. The conservative view was in fact even supported by the late Pope John Paul II who said that the Vatican ordains homosexuality to be a sin and it attempted to pit human rights against the family and against man. The late Pope states in his book "Memory and Identity" that gay marriages are a part of the new evil ideology.

The liberal faction on the other hand does the exact opposite by stating that one's sexual orientation happens to be an orientation that is normal and is accepted by God. They don't regard this either as a disorder or any sort of an addiction. There are certain positive moves also on the religious front as Rev. V. Gene Robinson who happens to be a gay, was elected as a Bishop for the Episcopal Church. In fact even the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams happens to be supportive of gay priests.

However, the battle for gays will rage on until the same-sex marriages find acceptance, they are no longer victimized on the basis of their sexual preferences and they don't suffer from hate crimes. With certain countries giving a legal sanction to marriage, the gays have had a reason to rejoice as the winds of change have started blowing. With the issues coming to fore and finding acceptance, it might just be an indicator of the good times to come.
