Gay Sports

Contrary to the prevailing misconception that gays are unique in their own ways, gay individuals share common interests like their heterosexual counterparts. Recent studies reveal that by divulging into active sports, gay men can overcome the homophobia factor. Ours is a society where there are plenty of die-hard fans for drug addict, violent and crime oriented sportsmen who have appeared in the limelight due to these reasons. But when it comes to favor and support for a gay sportsman, the fans are negligible. Who knows the inside out of a sports celebrity at a personal level? If the sports celebrity comes out in open with his sexual orientation most of his fans would not be affected by it. People are not sure whether they want to support a gay player, be it at the local level or the national level. But what seems to be crystal clear is that gays are indulging into outdoor sports activities to get rid of homophobia and other depression related factors.

There are several instances of gay individuals who have adopted sports that were traditionally considered to be macho in nature. However, gay activists forward the viewpoint that sports have nothing to do with one's masculinity. Only a handful of anti gay activists have no right to prohibit the gay community from indulging in different sports as per their discretion. An increasing number of sponsors have come forward to finance the gay sports and promote gay sportsmen. Gay sports offer their participants an opportunity to relate with their fellow counterparts and appreciate each other in the process. Being a minority community, gays and lesbians have suffered a great deal when it comes to personal security and most of them end up living a life of isolation. It is an endeavor of gay sports to revive the lost self-esteem in the gay community. Sports have always forwarded the notion of team spirit. It needs courage to come out and declare what you are, which, the people of gay community have exhibited. By participating in gay sports, their pride and courage will grow manifolds.

Certain gay activists and societies have sponsored and provided donation to promote gay sports and forwarded sports like badminton, volleyball and swimming as main gay sports. The patrons of gay culture argue whether there is any need to reveal one's sexual identity when it comes to sports. The aim of gay sports is to live with pride and self esteem and let us accomplish this motive by being a cultured and civilized society.
