QAF (Queer as Folk): What Character
Are You Attracted To?
For the past five seasons we, in America, or
at least parts of it, have been in love with the men of Queer as Folk. Gay
men, for once, had a revolutionary show that they could relate to. Lesbians
got a little taste of themselves as well. No matter what character you could
relate to, the majority of fans quickly became immersed in the lives of all
of the characters on QAF.
We all watched every Sunday, thrilled at the
prospect of a new show, and unable to wait to see what would happen next.
Queer as Folk was revolutionary because the characters were excellent. They
were people you could relate to, be attracted to, and even want to be with.
They were your every day gay men. They are people you would want to meet
if you could.
So, which one fits your needs? Which man do
you think fits the profile of the man you are usually attracted to and can
help you stay warm on those cold, cold evenings? The following article will
offer you some insight on the main players of QAF. You can learn more about
the men, the women - and even Debbie :) - to help you determine what type
of personality you may be interested in.

Brian
Love him or hate him you can not ignore two
facts about the Brian's of the world. First, you cannot help but be attracted
to him in some way, and, second, your feelings for him will be passionate
on some level. You will either support his actions, or you will not be able
to stand his actions. He's sarcastic because he can be - but he's also a
good friend if he will have you. He's a party boy in the best (or worst)
way. He loves men and isn't afraid to show that, but he's also intelligent,
successful, and good at everything he does. He dabbles in recreational drugs,
and nine out of ten times you will be nothing more than a hot, sweaty fling.
If that is what you are looking for in a man, then Brian is definitely the
man for you. However, if you want something more stable you might want to
just be friends
unless, of course, you're looking for that large,
invigorating challenge that resides outside of the bedroom.
Justin
There is a Justin in every bunch, and you can't
help but love him. He's the artistic type and generally, while younger, he
is still equally as mature as those around him. He is a steady friend, and
passionate when it comes to choosing the right lover for him. Of course,
he can also have fun in all the right ways. He does not need a relationship
to validate himself (like some men may), but he does want something beautiful
and meaningful in his life. A Justin isn't afraid to lay it on the line for
that special guy when the chance presents itself and he knows it's real.
Michael
Michael is the most adorable best friend you'll
ever have. He can pass for straight if he wants to - but to you he is obviously
gay. He's sweet, trustworthy, and makes a great friend. He's been through
some struggles, as we all have, but overall he deserves the world. He may
have been rebellious in his youth, but as he gets older expect to see a lovely
house-husband emerge. Michael is the perfect person for snuggling, window
shopping, and understanding phone calls or visits at three a.m. when you
need a good shoulder.
Ben
Fit, trim, intelligent, and a decent human being,
these are the things that sum up a Ben. The Ben's of the world always want
to do what is right. This is true not only in the sense of what is right
for them, but also for others, as well. With the ability to hold down a
meaningful job, and to stand up for his beliefs, Ben makes a good role model
and an excellent friend. If he loves you, no matter in what way, he will
work to take care of you in any way that is possible. He will defend you
- and the relationship you have together. Ben is an important man in his
circle because he is a rarity. Ben is someone that everyone has the ability
to learn something from. He is a genuine necessity in the gay community,
much like Brian, but in a completely different way!
Emmett
Emmett is everyone's favorite gay boy. He has
the ability to light up a party whether he is the one catering it, or not.
A true gem in a field of dirt, he is cute, funny, and a real charmer on many
levels. He gains pleasure from making other people feel good, which is something
he does a lot. He always is there with advice, a helping hand, or some fabulous
gourmet meal to offer you many of the things that most moms never could.
Although many Emmett's may go through the, "Always a bridesmaid, never a
bride" problems due to all the qualities we love him for, his impeccable
fashion sense may lead him down the aisle yet. Unfortunately, Emmett makes
such a good friend that often times you forget to look at the wonderful
possibility of making this fantastic man much more than that.
Ted
Ted is the complex friend or acquaintance you
have that you often wonder 'what the hell was he thinking'. He is someone
that wants to be loved so desperately that he is willing to make some of
the worst mistakes possible to feel a moment of acceptance. The Ted's of
the world need a relationship to validate themselves, and whether this means
trolling a gay husband Internet site, or the numerous clubs in the area,
he will do what he needs to do. Nothing is off limits for a Ted because he
has to be able to find love. The problem with Ted is he hasn't learned that
he needs to find love for himself before he can stop destroying himself to
find love. While not an amazing catch for a relationship, he is someone that
will stand by his friends. As a friend it will be hard to watch him destroy
himself when he is overlooking the most powerful love he will ever find -
which is already inside him.
The Lesbians
Melanie and Lindsay are the QAF's resident lesbians.
Although we are using that term loosely, they are easy to find in GLBT (gay,
lesbian, bisexual, transgender) circles.
Lindsay is bisexual though she claims she is
a lesbian. She can live in a lesbian relationship but as her friend you may
think that she is there because it is comfortable more than passionate. The
Lindsay's of the world use their sexuality to get what they want. They feel
power as well as love in relationships. The power is something they thrive
on, but deep down they need the passion that they cannot get in a lesbian
relationship. Therefore when the occasional sweaty, firm, and sexist man
comes along she will use her power to be shown who is boss. This means he
will put her in her place and she will claim the pleasure she does not have
in her every day life. This works out fine, though, because there is pleasure
in drama for Lindsay and apologizing for her "straight" discretions when
she is truly a lesbian is always something she is happy to do. Unfortunately,
as her friend this would mean you were forced to hear her out - of course,
after the first time this would get old. Despite this, she does have her
endearing qualities, such as mild artistic talents, quirky behaviors, and
decent parenting skills.
Melanie on the other hand is the lesbian all
good lesbians strive to be. It always makes you wonder when she ends up with
a Lindsay how something like that could happen. Melanie is proud to be a
lesbian, and understands that her womanhood is only enhanced by the need
to take care of that special girl. She is strong, opinionated, and fierce
in her loyalty. She is very protective of the one she loves and rarely, if
ever, holds anything back. Actually, she is more likely to be overly passionate
as opposed to blocking her feelings out. She works well in either the friend
or the lover role, depending on your feelings, though she deserves to be
with a lesbian because a threesome, with any man, is an insult to everything
she stands for.
Debbie
Finally we have Debbie; if anything she deserves
an honorable mention. If you know a Debbie you will smile just thinking about
her. She is crass, rude, bordering on openly perverse, and very loveable.
She is one of the most straight, supportive people you will find, and all
gay men deserve a mother like her. She fights for your rights and convinces
you to do the same. Despite some of her more obvious flaws she makes up for
them all - and then some - by her protective, mothering nature and the security
she offers you when you have no one to turn to.
Sadly, Queer as Folk has ended though it is
a show that will never be forgotten. Eventually, there will be new shows
that follow down the path that has been paved. However, Brian; Michael; Emmett;
and Debbie have entered our hearts and homes - and whether we know people
like them, or not, we will remember the lessons they have taught us for a
long, long time.
